'Handmade' covers a lot of ground. The technique used to construct a rug has a direct impact on how it feels, how long it lasts, and which rooms it suits best. These aren't subtle differences.

Hand-Knotted: The Most Labour-Intensive

Each individual knot is tied by hand onto the warp threads, row by row, across the full width of the rug. A skilled weaver might tie several thousand knots in a single day, but a large, finely knotted rug can still take months to complete. The result is a rug with exceptional density, structure, and longevity. Hand-knotted rugs handle heavy foot traffic without losing their form. They're the natural choice for living rooms, hallways, and open-plan spaces where the rug is walked on constantly.

Hand-Tufted: Softer, Quicker, More Accessible

A tufting gun punches loops of yarn through a canvas backing, which is then finished with a secondary backing material. The process is still manual and skilled, but it's considerably faster than knotting. The resulting rug tends to be softer and lighter, with a more consistent pile height. Hand-tufted rugs are ideal for bedrooms and sitting areas where comfort matters more than maximum durability. They're also typically more affordable priced.

Hand-Woven: Flat, Versatile, and Understated

Woven on a loom with no pile, hand-woven rugs have a distinctly different character. They lie flat, they're lighter to handle, and they work in spaces where a thick-pile rug would feel like too much. Colours Photograph Differently to How They Look in a Room

Screen brightness, photography lighting, and image compression all affect how a rug's colour appears online. A rug photographed against a bright white background will look lighter than it will in a room with warm, ambient lighting. As a rule, expect slightly warmer, richer tones in person than what you see on screen. If you're uncertain, get in touch. Size Guides Exist for a Reason. Use Them

Shedding Is Normal in New Rugs

Wool rugs, in particular, will shed loose fibres in the first few weeks. This is not a defect. It's the natural result of fibres that weren't fully integrated into the weave during construction, working their way to the surface. A regular Hoover on a low setting is enough to manage it. Shedding reduces significantly after the first month or two.

A Rug Pad Makes a Meaningful Difference

Rug pads stop movement, protect the underside of the rug from friction against hard floors, and add a small but noticeable amount of cushioning underfoot. They also extend the life of the rug by reducing wear along the base. For any rug placed on a wooden or tiled floor, we'd recommend one.

Caring for Your Rug

Hoovering- How Often, How Gently

For most rugs, vacuuming once a week on a low suction setting is enough. Avoid using a beater-bar attachment on hand-knotted or hand-tufted rugs. The mechanical action can pull fibres and loosen knots over time. Flat-weave and hand-woven rugs are more forgiving and can handle a standard Hoover head.

Spills- Act Quickly, Don't Scrub

Blot spills immediately with a clean cloth, working from the outside edge inward to avoid spreading. Scrubbing pushes liquid deeper into the pile and damages fibres. For most stains, cold water and a mild, pH-neutral soap is sufficient. Avoid chemical cleaners unless they are specifically safe for natural fibres.

Rotation- Easy and Effective

Rotate your rug 180 degrees every six to twelve months. This distributes foot traffic evenly across the surface and prevents one area from wearing faster than the rest. It also helps with fading in rooms that receive directional sunlight.

Deep Cleaning- When and How

Most handmade rugs benefit from a professional clean every two to three years, depending on use. For smaller rugs, hand washing with cold water and a gentle wool-safe detergent works well. Always lay flat or hang straight to dry. Never tumble dry.
