Rugs Made to Last. Priced to Make Sense.
Every rug in this collection was made by hand, usually over the course of several weeks, sometimes months. The people who made them are skilled craftspeople working in workshops across India. We've visited them. We know their names. And we sell their work directly to you, without the layers of importers and distributors that inflate what you'd pay elsewhere.
That's not a marketing angle. It's just how we work. When you buy rugs online through Fableroom, you're paying for the rug, not the chain of hands it passed through to reach you.
Over 300 designs. Multiple techniques, materials, and sizes. All made properly, all priced honestly.
How Rugs Are Made: Hand-Knotted vs. Hand-Tufted vs. Hand-Woven
'Handmade' covers a lot of ground. The technique used to construct a rug has a direct impact on how it feels, how long it lasts, and which rooms it suits best. These aren't subtle differences.
Hand-Knotted: The Most Labour-Intensive
Each individual knot is tied by hand onto the warp threads, row by row, across the full width of the rug. A skilled weaver might tie several thousand knots in a single day, but a large, finely knotted rug can still take months to complete. The result is a rug with exceptional density, structure, and longevity. Hand-knotted rugs handle heavy foot traffic without losing their form. They're the natural choice for living rooms, hallways, and open-plan spaces where the rug is walked on constantly.
Hand-Tufted: Softer, Quicker, More Accessible
A tufting gun punches loops of yarn through a canvas backing, which is then finished with a secondary backing material. The process is still manual and skilled, but it's considerably faster than knotting. The resulting rug tends to be softer and lighter, with a more consistent pile height. Hand-tufted rugs are ideal for bedrooms and sitting areas where comfort matters more than maximum durability. They're also typically more affordable priced.
Hand-Woven: Flat, Versatile, and Understated
Woven on a loom with no pile, hand-woven rugs have a distinctly different character. They lie flat, they're lighter to handle, and they work in spaces where a thick-pile rug would feel like too much. The weave structure means the design shows on both sides. Hand-woven rugs suit kitchens, dining areas, and any space where you want something grounding without visual weight.
How to Choose the Right Rug for Each Room
Room-specific rug decisions come down to three things: size, material, and how much that room gets used. Style comes after.
Living Room
The single most common mistake when buying a rug for a living room is choosing one that's too small. A rug that doesn't extend past the sofa legs makes the furniture look unanchored. The room ends up feeling scattered rather than settled.
A living room rug should be large enough for the front legs of all key furniture to rest on it, or large enough to contain the full seating arrangement. Either works. Both feel intentional. Modern rugs for living rooms in neutral tones tend to have the most staying power, because they work with different furniture arrangements and don't age with trends.
Bedroom
Bedrooms don't need bold rugs. They need soft ones. The priority is how the rug feels when your feet hit the floor in the morning, not how it photographs. Hand-tufted or hand-woven rugs work particularly well in bedrooms. They're softer underfoot and feel more enveloping rather than decorative. Stylish rugs for bedroom tend to work best in quieter palettes that let the space breathe.
Dining Room
A dining room rug needs to be large enough that chairs can be pulled out without catching the edge. The general guide: add at least 60cm to each side of the table. Material matters here, too. Denser weaves and natural fibres handle spills and cleaning more reliably than loose-pile options.
Hallways and Runners
Runners work best when they follow the natural width of the hallway, leaving a bare floor visible on each side. A runner that's too wide makes a narrow hallway feel cramped. One that's too narrow disappears. Durability is the main consideration here. Wool and wool-blend options hold up better in high-traffic corridors.
What to Know Before You Buy Rugs Online
Buying a rug without seeing it in person involves a certain amount of trust. Here's what we think is worth knowing before you decide.
Colours Photograph Differently to How They Look in a Room
Screen brightness, photography lighting, and image compression all affect how a rug's colour appears online. A rug photographed against a bright white background will look lighter than it will in a room with warm, ambient lighting. As a rule, expect slightly warmer, richer tones in person than what you see on screen. If you're uncertain, get in touch. We're happy to share additional imagery or advise based on your room's light conditions.
Size Guides Exist for a Reason. Use Them
Before ordering, mark out the rug's dimensions on your floor with masking tape. It takes about three minutes and removes all the uncertainty. Our sizing guide covers every room type with specific measurements and furniture configuration options.
Shedding Is Normal in New Rugs
Wool rugs, in particular, will shed loose fibres in the first few weeks. This is not a defect. It's the natural result of fibres that weren't fully integrated into the weave during construction, working their way to the surface. A regular Hoover on a low setting is enough to manage it. Shedding reduces significantly after the first month or two.
A Rug Pad Makes a Meaningful Difference
Rug pads stop movement, protect the underside of the rug from friction against hard floors, and add a small but noticeable amount of cushioning underfoot. They also extend the life of the rug by reducing wear along the base. For any rug placed on a wooden or tiled floor, we'd recommend one.
Caring for Your Rug
Hoovering- How Often, How Gently
For most rugs, vacuuming once a week on a low suction setting is enough. Avoid using a beater-bar attachment on hand-knotted or hand-tufted rugs. The mechanical action can pull fibres and loosen knots over time. Flat-weave and hand-woven rugs are more forgiving and can handle a standard Hoover head.
Spills- Act Quickly, Don't Scrub
Blot spills immediately with a clean cloth, working from the outside edge inward to avoid spreading. Scrubbing pushes liquid deeper into the pile and damages fibres. For most stains, cold water and a mild, pH-neutral soap is sufficient. Avoid chemical cleaners unless they are specifically safe for natural fibres.
Rotation- Easy and Effective
Rotate your rug 180 degrees every six to twelve months. This distributes foot traffic evenly across the surface and prevents one area from wearing faster than the rest. It also helps with fading in rooms that receive directional sunlight.
Deep Cleaning- When and How
Most handmade rugs benefit from a professional clean every two to three years, depending on use. For smaller rugs, hand washing with cold water and a gentle wool-safe detergent works well. Always lay flat or hang straight to dry. Never tumble dry.
Why Buy Rugs Online with Fableroom?
There are plenty of places to buy rugs online. Here's what we think sets Fableroom apart, and we'll let you decide whether it matters to you.
Fableroom works directly with artisan workshops in India: one of the world's most established centres of handmade rug production. The craftspeople we work with are specialists. Many have spent decades developing skills in hand-knotting, hand-weaving, and hand-tufting techniques that machine production simply cannot replicate.
We don't have a showroom. We don't have retail overheads. We don't use a chain of distributors between the maker and the buyer. That means our pricing reflects what handmade rugs actually cost to produce, not what the market thinks it can charge for them.
The rugs in this collection are the same pieces you'd find priced significantly higher at major UK retailers. The difference isn't in the rug. It's in the margin.
We also have a 30-day return policy, free UK delivery on orders over £500, and a team available to advise on size, technique, and styling if you're unsure. We're not trying to push a sale. We're trying to make sure the rug you choose is the right one for your home.
FAQs
- How to choose the right rug size?
Use masking tape to outline the size before buying. For living rooms, ensure that at least the front legs of furniture sit on the rug. For dining spaces, add 60cm around the table. Our guide helps you find the perfect fit for designer area rugs.
- Are handmade rugs from India really of better quality?
They can be, if made by skilled artisans using the right materials. Well-crafted premium quality rugs, especially cotton and wool rugs, offer better durability and feel than mass-produced options.
- My rug is shedding. Should I be concerned?
No. Shedding is normal in new wool rugs. Vacuum lightly every few days, and it should reduce within 4–6 weeks.
- What’s the difference between hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs?
Hand-knotted rugs are denser and long-lasting, ideal for high-traffic areas. Hand-tufted rugs are softer and better for comfort-focused spaces like bedrooms or boho rugs for home decor.
- Can I return a rug if it doesn’t suit my space?
Yes. You can return your rug within 30 days if the size, colour, or style doesn’t work. We’d rather you find the right fit for your home.
